There are clear differences between coaching and mentoring, however these differences complement each other, making both valuable and necessary. Together they are a powerful combination for developing individuals. This can be complex, however given some thought it is easy to distinguish between the two. Both have the main purpose of developing the individual not only for their current job, but also for the future.

This course will introduce coaching and mentoring as a quality intervention within candidate’s own settings and sector areas. The course will consider how coaching and mentoring can be used to develop and support team members. Coaching and mentoring skills will be explored, including skills needed to plan, undertake, and review successful coaching and mentoring applications.



The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To understand what makes a good coach and a good mentor
  2. To explore coaching and mentoring techniques
  3. To know which situations respond to coaching and mentoring in an early years context
  4. To be able to use coaching and mentoring as a quality intervention
  5. To understand how coaching and mentoring can improve staff morale and performance
