The Common Assessment Framework for children and young people (CAF) is a shared assessment tool used across agencies in England to improve services. Most local authorities have now developed this tool (CAF) and it is also known by other names such as the ‘Early Help’ or ‘Early Interventions Assessment’. It was designed to help professionals develop a shared understanding of a child’s needs, so they can be met more effectively. It will avoid children and families having to tell and re-tell their story and will reduce duplicated information.

This course is designed for all staff working with early years children and will give them a detailed understanding of the process and how it can aid and support.



The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To gain a deeper understanding of the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) Early Help/Intervention
  2. To understand the purpose of the CAF/Early Help
  3. To consider who the CAF/Early Help supports and why
  4. To know and understand the legal requirements the duty of care in relation to CAF/Early Help applications and the statutory requirements
  5. To reflect upon the EYFS welfare requirements in relation to the CAF /Early Help
  6. To responses to Integrated working to implement the CAF/Early Help assessments
  7. To review local thresholds of need and the LSCB
  8. To reflect upon case studies and identify who may benefit from the CAF/Early Help assessments or a child who may be at risk of significant harm
  9. To follow the process of the CAF/Early Help and documentation
  10. To consider Local Safeguarding Children Board links and the processes used


This course ensures your practice is in line with the requirements of the Childcare Act 2006 (the Act), as amended by the Children and Families Act 2014. It will also support your continuous professional development and enable you to keep well informed and up-to-date with current practice.
