Literacy is a specific area of learning, built on the foundations of prime areas of the EYFS. Literacy covers BOTH reading and writing.

Literacy links with the principles of communication and language and should be introduced throughout an Early Years setting to be accessible at all times. Creativity and interests should always be considered when planning for literacy in Early Years.

This course will enable staff to understand, plan and develop early years literacy, and provide a learning environment that stimulates and encourages the development of literacy in early years.

The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To understand what literacy means in terms of Early Years
  2. To explore why literacy is significant in the Early Years and for children’s learning
  3. To understand the importance of reading, and how this can be represented within Early Years
  4. To understand the importance of writing, and how this can be represented in Early Years
  5. To understand how to engage parents in their child’s learning

This course ensures your practice is in line with the requirements of the Childcare Act 2006 (the Act), as amended by the Children and Families Act 2014. It will also support your continuous professional development and enable you to keep well informed and up-to-date with current practice.
