The value and opportunities that come from bits and bobs are not to be underestimated! By reusing, recycling, upcycling, reclaiming, and just by being resourceful, we can effectively equip the early years environment with all that the children need to play and learn.
Natural resources can be free and come in all shapes and sizes; boxes, tubes, and household containers can be collected from parents. Then all we need to do is spend a little time wandering around junk stores and second-hand markets and we’re all set! It is then how we use these to resource the environment, outdoors and in, to spark curiosity, creativity, and imagination, that requires knowledge and skill.
Open-ended experiences, created using these loose parts, provide children with opportunities to play together or alone, to make decisions, solve problems. and try out new ideas. These bits and bobs may be a house to one child, a racing car to another, and afternoon tea for a teddy’s tea party, all in one afternoon. Think back to the things you remember most about your childhood – finding treasures around the house, in your mum’s cupboards or your grandad’s shed. We must have all watched the child at Christmas with the expensive present and the cardboard box. If we let ourselves think like children, we will quickly start to see the value in bits and bobs!
