Research shows that outdoor learning, love it or hate it, is where many children learn best. With growing obesity rates, more time spent looking at screens, concerns around mental health and well-being, and children becoming disconnected from the natural world, time spent playing outside, now more than ever, is a vital part of the early years curriculum. Many practitioners, however, struggle with ideas for delivery, funding, and resourcing.

This course will provide you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to move outdoor learning, in your setting, forwards by:

1. Examining the role of the adult in supporting and extending learning outdoors, across all areas of the curriculum
2. Providing a wealth of ideas as to how to develop your outside area, enabling you to make the most of the natural and built environment to support and extend children’s interests
3. Supporting planning by providing you with a range of seasonal learning opportunities, across the curriculum
4. Promoting the specific areas of learning outside through stories, phonics and maths games
5. Creating opportunities for creative and critical thinking through the use of loose materials
6. Providing information on funding and resourcing the outdoors
7. Looking at the current research on the benefits of outdoor learning
8. Looking at risk assessments and risk/benefit analysis

This course will ensure your practice is in line with the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage, The Early Years Framework and The Foundation Phase. It will also support your continuous professional development in line with the Early Years Teachers Standards.
